Raglan opens 12 new affordable homes in Meare

Bramble Close, a brand new Raglan Housing development of 12 homes for affordable rent which has just won the Mendip Building Excellence Award for Best Affordable New Housing Development, has been opened in St Mary’s Road, Meare near Glastonbury. The event was officially celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Bramble Close residents, Raglan staff, members of Meare Parish Council and local suppliers.

A budget which puts homeownership out of reach for low-paid people

While the Government’s Help to Buy scheme is certainly stimulating the housing market, the Chancellor must not forget the millions of hardworking people on low incomes who don’t earn enough money to be eligible for the scheme. For them, shared ownership, which enables a purchaser to buy a share of a property and pay a subsidised rent on the remainder, and have the opportunity to buy more equity as their situation develops, is their only hope of owning a home.

To mark the beginning of the National Housing Federation’s Rural Housing Week (10-16 June), Raglan Housing is living up to its promise  of building at least 10 per cent of its affordable new homes in rural communities for local people. Since September 2012, Raglan which has over 60 rural developments across the South East, South West and the Midlands, has started construction on 120 new homes in Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and Leicestershire. Rural areas are those with settlements with a population under 10,000 in which around 19 per cent of the English population live.
