Derelict bakery transformed into much-needed temporary housing for local people in Swanage

An old derelict building, once the former site of Herston Bakers in Swanage town centre, has been converted by Raglan Housing into two much-needed temporary homes for local people. The new accommodation was officially opened last week (31 October) at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by members of Purbeck District Council and Raglan Housing.

The merger of Jephson and Raglan has been given the go ahead by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The new organisation will be called Stonewater and will be one of the UK’s most significant social housing providers, both in terms of assets and geographic spread with around £160 million in turnover and £1.6 billion in assets.

New affordable rental homes take shape in Chard

A £1 million development of 11 affordable rental homes in Great Western Road, Chard is beginning to take shape.

Raglan Housing, working in partnership with South Somerset District Council and local contractor Brookvale Homes, is building the new scheme which is the second and final phase of a £5.1 million mixed development of 56 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership. A budget which puts homeownership out of reach for low-paid people

While the Government’s Help to Buy scheme is certainly stimulating the housing market, the Chancellor must not forget the millions of hardworking people on low incomes who don’t earn enough money to be eligible for the scheme. For them, shared ownership, which enables a purchaser to buy a share of a property and pay a subsidised rent on the remainder, and have the opportunity to buy more equity as their situation develops, is their only hope of owning a home.

To mark the beginning of the National Housing Federation’s Rural Housing Week (10-16 June), Raglan Housing is living up to its promise  of building at least 10 per cent of its affordable new homes in rural communities for local people. Since September 2012, Raglan which has over 60 rural developments across the South East, South West and the Midlands, has started construction on 120 new homes in Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and Leicestershire. Rural areas are those with settlements with a population under 10,000 in which around 19 per cent of the English population live.
